The greater fringed gentian is a very rare, threatened wildflower that requires a meadow ecosystem to grow. One of the places it IS able to grow in NH is on the ski slopes of Mt. Sunapee.
This gorgeous purple flower blooms in October, and because of that, Mt Sunapee ski resort works with the state of NH to wait until after the gentian blooms to mow the fields. This is such a good example of conservation working with recreation to keep natural areas both ecologically diverse and accessible. It’s not an easy thing to accomplish but they are doing it well here.
Once I learned about the gentian and the coordination going on to protect it, I knew it had to be the subject of the woodcut I demonstrated making at the League of NH Craftsmen fair, which sits at the base of Mt. Sunapee. It felt important to make a piece about the land we were standing on, to tell a story the fairgoers might not know.
“Wild Sunapee Gentians” is a 7-block woodcut, printed in my open-air demo tent over the course of the 9-day fair in August 2026. Blocks measure approx 9 × 12”, paper 11 × 14”. Limited run of 50.
A percentage of proceeds from this print will be sent to the Friends of Mt Sunapee and the League of NH Craftsmen.
Due to the nature of the block printing process, colors and printing will vary slightly in each print.
