veery

$125.00

Even if you spent all your free time in the woods, you may never have seen a veery. They’re small and brown and therefore camouflage well into the forest floor. But when they sing? Man, that song is what turned me into the bird nerd I am today. It’s a series of downward flutey spirals that echo through the woods in a cheerfully haunting way. When I first heard that call, back when I was 22, I ran to my computer and typed in ‘bird call that spirals” and found my veery. …And was hooked.

So if they can turn a girl into a birder, I figured they deserve their own print. This is a 4-block woodcut of the inconspicuous veery blending in, as it does, to the forest understory around it. The layers of color look almost like stained glass panels on this translucent Thai Kozo paper. The block measures 7.25x10.75” (paper measures 8.25x11.75”). Limited run of 26.
