oak

$45.00

In old growth trees, branches tend to be twisty, since small curves made in response to stress get more pronounced over time. They’re also generally clustered and spread out at the top of the trunk. Have you ever seen an old growth tree in the wild?

Besides their unusual shape, old growth trees are incredible for so many reasons. They house an untold number of animal, plant, and fungus species on and around them. They sequester carbon from the atmosphere and clean pollutants from surface water and the air we breath. They are magnificent specimen, and sadly only 1% of old growth forest in the eastern US remains.

I made this linocut for the 2023 Eastern Old Growth Forest Conference to allow conference participants the chance to print their own oak tree. It was a hit, and I was honored to contribute to such an important gathering.

Oak is printed with nontoxic, vegetable based inks on lotka paper* and measures 9x12”. Due to the nature of the block printing process, colors and printing will vary slightly in each print.

*Environmentally friendly lokta paper is handmade in Nepal from the fibers of the Nepal Paper Plant (a fast-growing shrub that regrows in 4-6 years after cutting). The harvest and creation of these lotka papers serve as a reliable source of income for Nepalese artisans.
