Connemara is an ode to one of the most magical places I have had the privilege of visiting: the western coast of Ireland. Rural Ireland’s timeless landscape— a tapestry of mossy drystone walls, open heather, and scattered grazing sheep— is a story of culture, craft, history, and living with nature. A story I want to keep reading over and over.
The sheep is an indispensable steward of Ireland’s fragile eco-systems. On bogs and heathlands, hill sheep serve as natural landscape managers. Their gentle grazing prevents aggressive grasses from choking out sensitive native plants, protecting vital habitats for ground-nesting birds like the red grouse. By turning marginal, nutrient-poor pastures into food and fiber without reliance on intensive fertilizers, traditional shepherding preserves peatlands and ancient field boundaries, guarding the rich biodiversity of the Irish countryside for generations to come.
